Driving an evening bus route through rural backroads meant that by the end of the night, there often wasn’t anyone left onboard. It was quiet, predictable work, and after enough years behind the wheel, a driver knew exactly when the last passenger had stepped off.
That’s why one particular stretch of road began to bother her.
It started with fleeting glimpses in the mirror—just enough to make her wonder whether someone might still be sitting behind her. But there was never anyone there when she looked again. Then came the old farmhouse, an almost forgotten stop along the route that hardly anyone used.
One rainy fall evening, after watching her final passenger leave the bus, she approached that farmhouse and heard a very familiar sound. Someone had pulled the cord requesting the next stop.
