The legend of the Greenbrier Ghost began with the sudden death of a young woman named Zona Heaster Shue in rural West Virginia in 1897.
Her mother, Mary Jane Heaster, never believed the explanation she was given. With her daughter already buried and no living witness able to tell her what had happened, Mary began praying for something extraordinary: she wanted Zona herself to come back and tell her the truth.
Mary later swore that her daughter appeared to her on four separate nights.
She insisted they were not dreams.
What Zona supposedly revealed during those visits would lead her mother to push for an investigation, the opening of her daughter’s grave, and a discovery that transformed a grieving woman’s story into one of the most famous ghost legends in American history.
