Working in a pub that dated back to the 1600s, he never found the idea of ghosts especially surprising.

The staff already had stories. Footsteps moved through empty rooms upstairs. People occasionally caught sight of a man near the back of the building. Even the cellar had a way of making you feel as though you weren’t quite alone.

After a while, it all became part of the job. He stopped checking every strange noise. He stopped wondering who might be walking around after closing.

Then one night, while locking up alone, he heard those familiar footsteps again.

Only this time, they didn’t stay upstairs.
