In the winter of 1716, strange disturbances began inside Epworth Rectory, the home of Reverend Samuel Wesley and his large family.
At first, they blamed rats, settling floors, and perhaps even the children. But the noises became harder to dismiss. Heavy footsteps crossed empty rooms. Knocking moved through walls and floors. Doors rattled, a mill turned by itself, and the sounds sometimes appeared to answer when family members challenged them.
Even more strangely, the disturbances seemed to react during family prayers.
The Wesleys eventually gave the presence a name: Old Jeffrey.
What makes the Epworth haunting unusual is that the family documented many of the events while they were still happening. More than three centuries later, no one has ever established what Old Jeffrey was—or why, after two months of making itself known, it simply stopped.
