She’d babysat plenty of children before, and nothing about this job seemed unusual. The parents mentioned a minor electrical problem before heading out for the evening, and after the kids were asleep she settled into the familiar routine of picking up toys and waiting for them to return.
Then one doll refused to stay where she left it.
At first she blamed herself. After all, it was an unfamiliar house, three young children, and more toys than anyone could keep track of. But the more she tried to convince herself she’d simply made a mistake, the more impossible the evening became. By the time the parents came home, she was anxious to tell them what had happened.
They took one look at the doll sitting on the kitchen counter…and immediately knew why it was there.
