Resurrection Mary is one of Chicago’s most enduring ghost legends.

Since at least the 1930s, drivers along Archer Avenue have reported seeing a young woman in a white dress walking alone after dark. Some stopped to offer her a ride. Others claimed she appeared suddenly in the road. Again and again, the encounters ended near Resurrection Cemetery—where Mary would vanish without explanation.

Over the decades, the legend grew to include mysterious sightings at the cemetery gates, cab drivers who swore she disappeared from their cars, and generations of people deliberately driving Archer Avenue hoping to see her.

Researchers have tried for years to identify the real woman behind the story, but no candidate fits every part of the legend.

Whoever she was, Chicago has known her by one name for nearly a century: Resurrection Mary.
