She had known the old bar practically her entire life.
Everyone in town had heard the stories—the former hotel rooms upstairs, the Prohibition tunnels below, the mysterious woman employees sometimes saw, and strange sounds that seemed to belong to another era. She had eaten there, had drinks there, and never thought much about any of it.
Then she noticed a help-wanted sign.
She already had a job. She wasn’t looking for another one. Yet after leaving the bar that night, she couldn’t stop thinking about going back.
Eventually, she applied. Only after she began working there did she discover just how much of the town’s folklore the employees had experienced for themselves.
And years later, one question still bothered her: Why had she wanted that job so badly in the first place?
