At first, the children thought their mother was calling their names from the other side of the house. The voice sounded exactly like her—sharp, impatient and loud enough to make them think they were in trouble. But whenever they went to find her, she insisted she hadn’t called them.
Then their mother heard it too. She was home alone putting away groceries when her son called “Mom” from down the hallway. She answered without thinking.
Then she remembered he was at school. The voice called again. This time, it came from right beside her.
She abandoned the groceries and waited outside until her husband returned. Footsteps could be explained. Appliances turning on might be electrical. But something inside that house had learned the family’s voices—and it knew how to make them answer.
