She lived alone, and someone seemed to be walking through her attic in the middle of the night. So she called the police. A young officer arrived to check the space above her ceiling and find out whether anyone had gotten inside.
What he found should have been reassuring.
But as he examined the attic, the footsteps she described became harder to account for. There was a problem with the idea of someone moving around up there—something she hadn’t known when she made the call. His explanation frightened her more than the original noise.
Then she asked whether it could be paranormal.
He had come to investigate a possible intruder. Now he was facing a different question: what could he tell a woman who was still hearing someone in a place where no person should have been able to walk?
