From the time she was very young, she occasionally had a strange certainty that something was about to happen.
Seconds later, footsteps might cross an empty hallway. A light might turn on when no one was near the switch. She sometimes sensed someone moving through the house before there was any sound at all.
There were other unexplained incidents too, and at least once, someone else heard exactly what she heard.
As she grew older, she found ordinary explanations for some of the experiences. Sleep paralysis explained a few frightening nights. Other moments could have been coincidence or childhood imagination.
But one thing remained harder to explain. For years, she sometimes knew what was coming.
Then, sometime around adulthood, that strange awareness disappeared completely.
