With three boys in the house, there was usually someone to blame when a cabinet door was left open or something wasn’t where it belonged.
And their parents did plenty of blaming. But every so often, the explanation didn’t quite work.
Several cabinet doors would be standing open at once. Footsteps would move along the stairs when everyone was accounted for. And eventually, one of the boys saw something happen that was much harder to pin on a forgetful kid.
Their father always had a reasonable explanation. Their mother eventually decided she wanted to try something else.
And what happened afterward left the family wondering whether all those years of saying “it wasn’t me” might actually have been true.
