The story of Roland Doe began in 1949, when the thirteen-year-old’s family started hearing scratching inside their home and witnessing strange activity that seemed to follow him from place to place.
They sought help from doctors, psychiatrists, and their own Lutheran minister before eventually turning to the Catholic Church. In St. Louis, Jesuit priests began documenting what they believed they were witnessing: moving furniture, unexplained scratches, violent reactions during prayers, and disturbances that continued through weeks of exorcism sessions.
Some of the men involved became convinced Roland was genuinely possessed. Others remained uncertain about what they had seen.
More than twenty years later, his case would help inspire The Exorcist.
But long before Hollywood transformed the story, there was Roland Doe—and a real exorcism that remains debated to this day.
