She was home alone in the middle of the afternoon when she heard someone come through the front door.
The keys rattled. The door opened. Heavy boots crossed the house and moved into the kitchen. Assuming it was her husband or son stopping home early, she called out but got no response. A few moments later, the footsteps started down the hallway and stopped directly outside the bathroom door.
Certain someone was standing there waiting to scare her, she yanked the door open. Nobody was there.
After searching the entire house and calling both her husband and son, she learned neither of them had been home. The front door was still locked, yet she remains certain she heard someone enter the house, walk through the kitchen, and stop just outside the bathroom.
Years later, it’s still one of the most unsettling experiences she’s ever had.
