Every morning at five, his grandfather followed the same routine. He would hitch the horse to the wagon, head out across the family’s secluded mountain property to tend to the farm, then return home for breakfast before leaving for work in the coal mines.
Then a mining accident took his life.
About a week later, his widow was preparing breakfast before sunrise when she heard something familiar passing the house—the unmistakable sound of the horse and wagon making its usual morning trip. She rushed to the windows, but nothing was there.
The next morning, it happened again.
By the third morning, she was determined to find out whether grief was fooling her. So she woke the children, stationed them at the windows, and waited for five o’clock.
