The band buses were leaving before sunrise, which meant students were arriving at school long before the building normally opened.
When Luke realized he had forgotten an important folder in his locker, he ran inside to grab it before the buses left. The hallways were quiet and mostly dark. Halfway down the corridor he saw a custodian slowly mopping the floor.
Luke didn’t recognize him, but that didn’t seem strange at the time. Someone had to clean the building before students arrived. Later that afternoon, he casually mentioned the early shift to the school’s head custodian.
That’s when the conversation took a turn.
Because according to the staff…No one had been in the building that morning.
