They chose the smaller dorm for quiet. The building had recently been converted from offices, and each room still had a heavy door with tinted glass in the upper half. They covered the window for privacy and settled into routine.
Then the lock began turning at night.
At first it was just sound — metal shifting as if someone with a key were trying to enter. The hallway was always empty. Soon the pattern expanded. One roommate heard the other return and lie down while she was still across campus. Both watched the curtain over the glass move as though someone leaned in to look.
It never forced the door. It never made a scene. But the behavior felt deliberate, like someone following a familiar sequence.
The final incident did not happen at the threshold. It happened inside the room.
